چکیده

Introduction X-linked muscular dystrophy (MD) occurs in 2 forms, mild and severe. The severe type, first described by Duchenne in 1868, is characterized by presentation before the age of 6 years, rapid progression of muscle weakness, inability to walk by the age of 12 years and death before the age of 20 years. It was Becker and Kiener (1955) who first delineated a 'benign' form, in which the condition presents later and pursues a slower course. This is a distinct entity and not simply a part of a spectrum of severity. Whether or not the mild type should be further subdivided remains debatable (Shaw and Dreiffuss, 1969). In both forms, muscular pseudohypertrophy, especially of the calf muscles, is common. A case is now reported of Becker (mild type) MD in which pseudohypertrophy of the muscles of the thenar eminence was prominent.

Unusual type of benign x-linked muscular dystrophy.

Duchenne muscular dystrophy affects mainly young boys and is usually inherited as an X-linked recessive trait. The disease begins in infancy or early childhood and is characterized by weakness of the lower limbs and pelvic girdle musculature almost invariably associated with swollen calves ('pseudohypertrophy'). The weakness gradually progresses and ultimately the child becomes confined to a wh...

Detection of carriers of benign X-linked muscular dystrophy.

From the point of view of genetic counselling carrier detection is most important in X-linked disorders. Okinaka et al. (1959) were the first to employ the serum level of creatine kinase to detect female carriers of X-linked Duchenne muscular dystrophy. Since then many investigators have confirmed the usefulness and reliability of this test. So far results on over 200 carriers have been reporte...

Detection of the Duplication in Exons 56-63 of Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy Patients with MLPA

Background Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD) is a deadly X-linked recessive disorder. This genetic disorder affects 1 among 3,500-5,000 males in the world. The majority of the patients are male, due to the type of inheritance. It affects most of the skeletal, the respiratory, and cardiac muscles, causing these vital organs to contract and eventually mortality.<br...

An unusual family of benign "X" linked muscular dystrophy with cardiac involvement.

A family of benign X-linked muscular dystrophy is described. Two of the 3 affected members appear quite representative of Becker's dystrophy. A third shows no pseudohypertrophy, only gross atrophy, affecting proximal and distal muscles and also shows early onset contractures and electrocardiographic abnormalities and is in these ways much more representative of the variety described by Emery an...

The detection of carriers of benign (Becker-type) X-linked muscular dystrophy.

The use of serum creatine kinase (SCK) estimations in the detection of female carriers of the severe (Duchenne-type) X-linked muscular dystrophy was first introduced by Okinaka and his colleagues in 1959, and since then the value of this test has been confirmed by many others (Dreyfus and Schapira, 1961; Hughes, 1963; Richterich, et al, 1963; Emery, 1965; Rotthauwe and Kowalewski, 1965; Wilson,...
